What can I do with this Major?

This link provides excellent information whether you are considering a specific major or trying to identify career opportunities in your chosen major.

Freshman

  • As a part of your Freshman Seminar class, you will be introduced to the FOCUS 2 Career Program. After completing the “Career Readiness” and “Self Assessment” portions of the program, familiarize yourself with “Explore the Possibilities”.
  • Begin “Your Personal Portfolio” in FOCUS 2 by saving at least five majors that you are interested in investigating. Your major may be included in this group, but attempt to also include at least two majors from different disciplines. You should also save five occupations that interest you now. Again, you should choose at least two occupations that are not related to the field you are presently considering.
  • Browse the Career Counseling website link to Career Counseling site and look at the Career Opportunities that show how you can use the majors offered at ULL.
  • Investigate Department websites for any fields you are interested in pursuing or might think of as a back up plan. Check out the curriculum of the major you are pursuing or might pursue in the future.
  • Visit the Career Counseling Center in 110 Lee Hall. Take the free CHOICES career test available at the Center. Talk to the Career Counselor about your career plan and goals.
  • Consider registering for ACSK 140 “Career Decision Making” class. This is a one hour CR/NC course taught primarily online.
  • Look into joining campus and student organizations.
  • Reflect on your service learning experience and seek out additional ways to continue serving your community. Remember these experiences will be personally rewarding and help to build your resume.

Sophomore

  • After having completed your first full year of college, evaluate if your academic performance is in line with the major you have chosen. Talk to your advisor about your academic progress.
  • Update your FOCUS 2 Career Portfolio. Go through your saved majors and occupations. Do they still seem realistic?
  • Revisit the department website of the major you are pursuing or wish to pursue. Evaluate the courses you have yet to take.
  • Talk to faculty in your major of interest. Seek our professionals in the fields you have saved on FOCUS 2. Gather as much information as possible by networking.
  • Make an appointment with the Career Counselor in the Career Counseling Center in 110 Lee Hall. Go over your academic progress and your career goals with the counselor. Be sure you are on the right track!
  • If you have not joined any school organizations, consider joining organizations that would enhance your social and career life. Consider leadership positions if they are offered to you.
  • Develop a good rapport with faculty (especially in your major), administrators and supervisors for positive references.
  • Begin a Career File that includes any honors, awards, references or extracurricular activities that you may later want to include on a resume.
  • Seek out courses that will improve your over-all professionalism in areas such as communication, public speaking, computers, and leadership.
  • Check out the “Recommended Tools and Websites” on your FOCUS 2 program.
